ON THE BOOKS
Lorissa Toweel
Practising artist and contemporary jeweller.
Raised in Jozi’s (Johannesburg, South Africa) embrace, now living in Brisbane/Meanjin.
I have always leaned into alternative culture. I have a deep connection with all things dark, mystical and kooky. Like a dowsing rod, my connection to all things crude and other-wordly, along with my insatiable desire to melt metal into oozy, grungy wearables, seems to lead me to my tribe among the masses. The custodians of my pieces all carry a part of this narrative with them.
My relationship with metal is an intimate one. An exchange. A collaboration. The material and I form the works in conversation. Nothing is forced and this is evident in its unapologetic and organic nature of the work.
I melt things. I make things.
Annabelle Kent
Belle is a Tulmur/meanjin (Ipswich/Brisbane) based artist with a focus on wearable art and small sculpture. Drawing inspiration from surrealism, her work explores the intersection where the ordinary meets the uncanny or magical.
Belle’s exhibition work is particularly inspired by creating contemporary heirlooms that challenge gendered conventions in Western jewellery. Exploring states of consciousness, Belle is also intrigued by intricate details and the miniature.
As an ethical metalsmith, Belle specializes in lost wax casting and forging techniques, producing one-of-a-kind or small-batch pieces.
